    The OEB Math Circle Program

The Oakland/East Bay Math Circle (OEBMC) is a weekly after-school enrichment program specifically aimed at mathematically enthusiastic middle and high school students and their teachers.

In many enrichment programs, the students are self-selected, or encouraged by their parents to attend. This generally means that most students come from an "already enriched" socioeconomic level.

In contrast, the OEBMC is teacher-driven, we entrust the teachers to find students from varied backgrounds who may otherwise not know of such opportunities. We also expect these teachers to encourage the students to attend the program and possibly drive them, or accompany them on public transit. In return for bringing students, we will compensate teachers with a weekly honorarium. In addition, teachers will be offered a tuition-free, professional development math course. Classes for teachers will be offered simultaneously to the student courses at Laney College in Oakland on Mondays from 4:30-5:30PM. These lessons will cover material that very loosely parallels the topics for students, but in a pace and style more suited for grown-ups!

    Schedule

The program that we offer for these students consist of classes that meet weekly (Mondays from 4:30-5:30PM, with snacks served from 4:15-4:30) at Laney College in Oakland. In addition, several guest speakers will be scheduled throughout the year. For a more detailed calendar, Click Here!.

    Mathematical Content

Over the course of the year we will explore a wide-variety of mathematical topics. Our courses are not based on rigid curricula, but instead foster very flexible environments. The instructors will gently engage the students with captivating problems and beautiful theories in a class size small enough so that each student will be able to work at his or her pace.

    Faculty

These course are taught by Math Circle Instructors, prominent, enthusiastic and energetic mathematicians from the area that will give students a taste of fun math that will bring them back for the next session.

    Expectations of Teacher Participation

At the beginning of the school year, Math Circle leaders work with the Oakland Unified School district and other education networks to advertise the program in the schools. We ask teachers to select students whom they consider mathematically talented to attend the math circle. By "talent," we are not necessarily referring to high test scores. Sometimes talent is manifested by curiosity, or a passion to learn.

We remind you that the OEBMC is teacher-driven: we entrust the teachers to find students from varied backgrounds who may otherwise not know of such opportunities. We also expect these teachers to encourage the students to attend the program and possibly drive them, or accompany them on public transit. In return for bringing students, we will compensate teachers with a weekly honorarium. In addition, teachers will be offered a tuition-free, professional development math course.

To review expectations of student participation, visit the Student & Guardian Information page.

    Professional Development Opportunities

Teachers who accompany their students to the math circle also have the option to enroll in a tuition-free mathematics course for credit. While their students are in math circle sessions, teachers can join colleagues and explore advanced mathematics topics with a math circle faculty instructor. Guest lecturers will also make special presentations.

Participants may be eligible to earn continuing education credit, professional development units, or college course credits from San Jose State University.

In order to be eligible for the professional development credit, teachers must attend the monthly sessions of the Oakland/ East Bay Teacher's Circle (OEBTC) . These sessions will extend the weekly Math Circle Teachers' Session, and will take place Monday, 4-7 PM, at Laney College. Dinner will be provided for teacher participants and for any students they are responsible for transporting home from the longer session. Visit the Calendar to learn more about the scheduled Teacher's Circle Sessions.
