The Math Circle Mission

Mission

The Oakland/East Bay Math Circle offers middle and high school students and teachers in the Oakland and East Bay area the opportunity to learn advanced mathematics in a free, after-school enrichment program. This is an extraordinary activity for students who enjoy mathematics and want to learn more.

Aims of the program include:

  • To draw students to mathematics
  • To introduce students to the wonders of beautiful mathematical theories, and
  • To encourage students to undertake futures linked with mathematics, whether as mathematicians, mathematics educators, scientists, computer scientists, economists or business leaders.

The OEBMC will achieve these goals by:

  • Exposing middle and high school students to exciting mathematics presented by research mathematicians, mathematics educators and internationally seasoned Olympiad problem-solvers;
  • Providing extracurricular opportunities to extend mathematical knowledge and skill well beyond the school curriculum;
  • Giving opportunities to students to meet and work with other students of similar or superior math abilities and aspirations;
  • Providing invaluable advice on college selection, summer math programs and internships, and future mathematical orientation.

Background

Math circles originated in Eastern Europe. They are similar to school math clubs, but the activities are different because Math Circles are usually led by professional mathematicians (university professors or graduate students). The atmosphere of a math circle is informal, intensive, and fun with students working together and individually.

Math Circle People

The Math Circles community has four vital components: teachers in schools, students, school administrators, and professional mathematicians. Working together, they learn from each other and collectively raise the mathematical consciousness of our society.
