FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our program. For more information, please contact the program director, Ted Courant.

What is a Math Circle?

Math circles originated in Eastern Europe and have been slowly spreading throughout the United States. They are similar to school math clubs, but more intensive because they are usually led by a professional mathematician (university professor or graduate student) and the topics covered are not standard school math. In a well-run math circle, the atmosphere is fun, intensive, and playful. Work is done collectively as well as individually. There are active circles throughout the Bay Area, for links to these groups visit helpful program links.

For more information about Math Circle visit the National Association of Math Circles, http://www.mathcircles.org/.

Who may attend?

Any student who lives in the greater Oakland area (from both public, private and home school) who will be in middle and high school during the 2009-2010 academic year is eligible. Beyond that, the student must have a strong interest in mathematics and a desire to explore mathematical reasoning. (See the Parents & Students Information link for more information.)

Middle and high school teachers are also invited to attend and bring students to the program. Interested teachers should visit the Teacher’s Information link for more information.

How much does it cost to attend the Math Circle?

Thanks to our generous sponsors there is no fee for any activities. In fact, teachers will receive a weekly honorarium if they bring students to the program!

May I join the Circle now? I have already missed several sessions.

You can join the OEBMC anytime during the school year, just CLICK HERE to enroll.
We do recommend that you check the schedule and plan to attend the first day of a new topic. In general, the sessions and topics are independent of each other but topics may build on work from the previous week. If you have any questions about a good start date, feel free to contact the director.

Is this a remedial program?

No, this is an enrichment program. It is not for everyone. The ideal student should already have a very strong interest in mathematics. If you aren't sure if this is for you, come visit a class, you'll never know until you try!

Isn't this program selective for only certain students?

Yes, the program is not designed for all students; all participants must enjoy mathematics and have a desire to learn more. We believe that mathematical talent is manifested by curiosity or a passion to learn and we would like to find talented students and provide them an opportunity to explore more mathematics.

Is this an acceleration program? Can students attend the OEB Math Circle in place of standard courses?

No, the OEBMC is just for after-school enrichment. We will cover non-standard topics and look at traditional topics in great depth and from different points of view. Students will learn a lot but they will not be accelerating through any of the standard mathematics curriculum.

Is there homework?

Yes. But it will be fun to do.

Where is the program located?

The classes are held at Laney College. For exact location, directions, and parking information, click here.

Can parents/guardians take the students to the program?

Of course! More information about the location of the Math Circle can be found HERE!.

Can parents/guardians take the courses offered for teachers?

This could be arranged. Please inquire with the OEBMC Director, mathcircles(at)msri.org). Note: Tuition may be charged.

How do the Oakland/East Bay and San Francisco Math Circles differ from other local Math Circle programs?

The Oakland/East Bay Math Circle and the San Francisco Math Circle are designed to improve community outreach and offer professional development to teachers. Also :

  • The SFMC & OEBMC is teacher-driven. We rely on teachers to find and recruit students, and to bring the students to the program.
  • These programs are designed for students in grades 6--12, other programs focus on older students.
  • We offer courses specifically designed for teachers which take place during the program for students
